Start of an ERC Advanced Grant

December 1, 2025, is a significant date for the SAMS research group, as it marks the launch of our ERC Advanced SPRING grant. This project will lead us to explore the fascinating world of molecular motors and their application in various active systems. Several PhD and postdoctoral researchers will be joining us on this adventure. If you are interested in participating, please do not hesitate to contact us; two two-year postdoctoral positions are already open for application, starting next April.

Welcome to Shuhe, Simone and Gianni

Since November 3, 2025, we are happy to welcome three new SAMS members. Shuhe Zheng and Simone Grieco have been recruited as PhD students within the framework of the MonaLisa European project. In collaboration with the team of Prof. Jean-Marie Lehn (ISIS, Strasbourg), Shuhe Zheng will focus on the study of molecular diffusion constrained by mechanical actuation. In collaboration with the Soprema company, Simone Grieco will develop new sliding polymers with enhanced mechanical properties. Gianni Pacella will work as a postdoctoral researcher on the development of new motorized hydrogels.

As of October 1, 2025, two new PhD students will join the SAMS team: Marion Brobecker has been awarded a doctoral contract by the University of Strasbourg to measure forces generated by molecular motors. Within the framework of the MonaLisa European project, Victor Grangier will focus on the synthesis of new photoactivatable molecular motors and their study in soft self-assemblies.

Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network MonaLisa

The European MonaLisa project has received €4.1 million in funding from the European Union. Coordinated by our team, this project involves recruiting 15 doctoral students working in Strasbourg, Liège, Groningen, Dresden, Munich, Bologna, and Bordeaux. Several industrial partners will also contribute their expertise to train the doctoral students and help further develop the scientific advances achieved by the consortium. The coordinator will be assisted by Célia Jager, project manager, who has been recruited since April 2025. From October 1, 2023, two new PhD students will join the SAMS team:

Within the framework of an ANR collaborative project with Prof. Andreea Pasc (Université de Lorraine) and Dr. Mihail Barboiu (IEM, Montpellier), Yohan Zarate will work on the synthesis and study of new photoactivated molecular motors in bio-inspired assemblies.

Lou-Ann Accou has been awarded a doctoral contract by the University of Strasbourg to study light-activated molecular motors at surfaces and interfaces.

HDR Defense

Dr. Gad Fuks has successfully defended her habilitation (HDR) entitled "Integration of molecular motions in polymer networks" in front of the following jury members: Prof. Alberto Credi (University of Bologna), Prof. Patrice Woisel (University of Lille), Dr. Fabienne Gauffre (ISCR, Rennes) and Dr. Stéphane Bellemin-Laponnaz (IPCMS, Strasbourg).

ArtMoMa H2020 Marie Curie ITN project

The project ArtMoMa on artificial molecular machines has been granted 4.2 M€ by the European Union. Coordinated by our team, this project will involve the recruitment of 15 PhD students working in Strasbourg, Manchester, Bologna, Oxford, Dresden, and Gröningen. A number of industrial partner will also bring their expertize to help developing the breakthroughs made by the consortium. More to come in a specially dedicated website.

Summer School « Soft Matter and Smart Materials »

This European summer school, dedicated to the chemistry and physics of smart materials, is organized in collaboration with the Universities of Strasbourg and Freiburg (Germany). It will take place on July 1^st – 5^th at the European Doctoral College of Strasbourg. The selected students will benefit from lectures and tutorials involving the best worldwide specialists in the field (and including the Nobel Prize for Chemistry 2016, Ben Feringa).
